Student Design Charrette

The SGA has been kind enough to provide us with the results of their April 15th student design Charrette – a sort of public architectural brainstorming event – where students and architecture faculty tackled College Park’s lack of ‘College town feel’. This event was an unmistakable indication of students’ bottled up feelings about the city and it became an impetus for starting this site.
Some issues discussed include
- developing gateways to identify the entrance to College Park
- strengthening pedestrian access from existing and planned developments to campus
- where to locate new retail, residential and commercial space,
- the redevelopment of east campus and the Knox Boxes
- strengthening connections from campus to the existing metro station
- building heights
- exploiting natural resources

[...] A proposed Old Town College Park Historic District could prevent or slow new, pedestrian-scale development connecting the campus and downtown to the Metro station. The proposed district includes structures on both sides of Calvert Road, a street several groups from last spring’s design charrette targeted for dense development to create a pedestrian corridor running from the Metro station to downtown, the Knox Road area, and the campus. I am a graduate student in a joint architecture/planning masters program here at Maryland. I am in the process of working on my thesis this semester. My project focuses on master planning the 41 acres comprising the Knox Box site. I was able to participate in the student forum and charrette, as well as the presentation of the results to the city council. ReThink College Park is a great forum for continuing the momentum started by Andrew Rose and company. I will continue to patronize your site, and will try to incorporate as many of the student ideas as possible into my project. My one hope for the drawings and documents generated this semester is that they can offer concrete possibilities to generate further discussion. Keep up the good work, and stop by to say hello.
