I fully support holding developers to high standards in College Park. However, if they cannot predict the process, we should not expect them to want to work in our community.

Also, delays mean one thing for developers: added expense. I suppose this money could come from one of two places: their bottom line, or out of the pockets of future tenants.

Thanks for your input Michael. I do think LEED standards are great, but I don't agree with the form of brinksmanship that Mr. Dernoga increasingly approaches each and every development project. If the county wants LEED standards they should pass some legislation, not wait till the 11th hour and hold the developer at gunpoint. That's not how you treat people; especially people who have invested a lot of time (and millions of dollars) going through an established process and getting buy in all over the community.

I fully support PG County LEED legislation like that in MoCo. The Sector Plan as it is currently worded says nothing about LEED standards and those standards have not been used on any other project in College Park. Like I said, this is not an issue between "greedy developers" and environmentalist. To me it is an issue of fairness.(note that the yearlong delay was entirely due to the school facilities surcharge legislation which Dernoga insisted be passed before the project went forward)

I must admit, I am very disturbed about this back and forth on who is "the enemy" of College Park. It sadly boils down all the good arguments and turns it into a quarrel of five year olds. That said, I believe strongly in building up College Park's Route 1 Corridor and having lived here my whole life and having been given the honor of receiving my higher education here, I know the situation very well. I know many people, like Daddio, have seen the Mazza trip like a drive through traffic where close to the end they encounter a new traffic light that completely ruins their plan and makes them late to work. Yes, it is really annoying!

But now let's take a deep breath and step back to look at things. When I saw how angry Mr. Daddio was about Dernoga's actions, I wondered what radical thing could Dernoga to ruin the system. However, on close examination of the LEED system that Dernoga speaks of, I came to a slight shock. Daddio has demonified practical and necessary sustainability systems that will make College Park's future not a one night fling, but a promising, flourishing community.

I urge everyone to think about that. Yes, this is a disruption and all graduate students I give you complete permission to punch a wall at least 4 to 5 times. But in the end, sustainability should not become "the enemy" of this silly squabble.

Thank you all for being engaged in these issues,
Michael Novello
