University of Maryland to Host Public Open House on East Campus

WHAT: The University of Maryland will hold an East Campus open house on Thursday, June 19 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for members of the campus, College Park and surrounding communities.

The University's development partner, Foulger-Pratt/Argo, will present images and renderings of the various elevations, public spaces and architectural guidelines for the planned development. These renderings are the result of months' worth of work with the University's Architectural Design Standard Board and the East Campus Steering Committee.

An opportunity for questions and answers will follow the presentation.

The University of Maryland's East Campus site is comprised of approximately 38 acres bounded by Route 1 to the west, Paint Branch Parkway to the north, and the City of College Park to the south. Preliminary plans for the site include relocation of the university's existing administrative facilities, followed by construction of more than 2 million square feet of graduate housing, market rate housing, office space and retail amenities.

The University is developing its East Campus to create an environment that will attract high-quality mixed-use development to the Route 1 corridor, offer additional housing for graduate students, promote connections and partnerships with the City of College Park as part of the university's Master Plan, and provide a significantly enhanced campus setting to attract the best students and exceptional faculty to the university.

WHO: The East Campus Community Review Steering Committee, campus community members, and residents of College Park and surrounding communities.

WHEN: Thursday, June 19, 2008 - 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

WHERE: William L. Thomas, Jr. Room
University of Maryland Golf Course Clubhouse
College Park, Md.

I attended some of the ULI TAP. The PowerPoint should be available soon, with a written report to come about August. The tennis structures will probably not be able to be moved for commercial development, because of legal restrictions underlying the land the tennis structures are located on. Two of the three scenarios presented however had the tennis structures being relocated to the area where the 94th AeroSquadron Restaurant is now. The project in the scenario where the tennis structures remained was pretty limited in scope because of the lack of prime space on Paint Branch Parkway and limited roads that could access the rear of the property. All scenarios called for an office building on the vacant parking lot. The parking lot is owned by the County.

I just took a look at the Economic Development Update. One of the projects listed that I would like to learn more about is the Transit District Overlay Zone (TDOZ) Warehouse Area that was being studied by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Technical Assistance Panel (TAP).

Does anyone have some additional information on that? For instance, where would I be able to find the PowerPoint of that study?

And, while it's on my mind, does this study represent a step towards redeveloping the area bounded by the College Park airport to the north, the tennis courts to the south and east, and Paint Branch Avenue to the south and west? (I would love to see that vacant parking lot become history.)
