More updates 7/16

July 16th, 2008  |  by David Daddio  |  Published in City Garage/Condos/City Hall, General College Park  |  2 Comments

Two articles from the Diamondback:

- The city council has voted to approve the concept of selling the city hall site to a hotel/condo builder in an attempt to roll that project together with the East Campus TIF. City Hall would be moved to an undisclosed location. Previously that location was an abandoned school in Calvert Hills.

- UMD DOTS was forced to raise daily parking rates due to lower than usual commuter parking permit sales. This is surely the result of higher gas prices and more students living closer to campus. For some reason DOTS director David Allen was surprised in January that “Less than 50 percent of commuters drive to campus.” He reports the campus having “2,000 fewer parkers in the last five years.”

Yeah, the last thing the University and the surrounding area needs is more cars.

I wonder how large of an impact the purple line would have on the percentage of University commuters driving. Obviously, it would be significant.

I think an interesting situation might arise, however, if the Purple Line is able to decrease traffic on the Beltway significantly — particularly during rush hour. A negative response might result, wherein the number of cars using the Beltway would jump back up in response to less traffic. This response should still result in significantly fewer cars using the Beltway compared to the present, but I think it’s something to consider when making projections on traffic.
